Dropshipping in Pakistan: Local vs International Suppliers Compared (2026)

Should you dropship products already stocked in Pakistan or cheaper items from China? This comparison covers delivery times, cash on delivery risk, the Rs. 1,000 courier parcel rule, setup costs and a simple pricing sheet, then gives you a step-by-step rule for choosing your first model.

Quick answer

For dropshipping in Pakistan, start with local suppliers. Parcels arrive in about 3 to 5 days and cash on delivery works smoothly. China-sourced stock offers wider margins but takes about 10 to 17 days, which raises refusal risk. Test imports only after 30 local orders show your real return rate.

Key takeaways

  • • Local dropshipping is the safer start: stock is already in Pakistan, so parcels arrive in days and COD works well.
  • • International sourcing gives wider margins but longer waits, and long waits lead to more refused COD parcels.
  • • Nearly 70% of online shoppers still choose cash on delivery, according to a TGM Research survey cited by DHL.
  • • The Finance Act, 2025 cut the duty-free courier parcel limit to Rs. 1,000, so don't plan around duty-free imports.
  • • Price each product both ways, including your return rate, before you list it.
  • • Run about 30 local orders first, then test one or two high-margin imported items.

Most students who start dropshipping in Pakistan ask the same first question: should I sell products already sitting in a Karachi or Lahore warehouse, or cheaper items shipped from China? For a beginner, local dropshipping is usually the safer first step, because parcels arrive in days and cash on delivery works smoothly. International sourcing pays off later, once you know which products your buyers will actually wait for.

This guide compares the two models side by side. It uses current payment data, the latest customs rule for courier parcels and the terms Pakistani supplier platforms publish. Here is what you'll come away with:

  • How a local order and an imported order move from supplier to buyer
  • Why delivery time matters more in Pakistan than in most markets
  • What the Rs. 1,000 courier parcel limit means for China-sourced stock
  • A simple sheet for pricing one product both ways before you list it
  • A decision rule for picking your first model

Local vs International Dropshipping in Pakistan at a Glance

Before the detail, here's the short version. The delivery times below are the ones a supplier platform publishes for its own service, so treat them as typical, not guaranteed.

Factor Local dropshipping International dropshipping
Where stock sits A supplier's warehouse in Pakistan A factory or warehouse abroad, mostly China
Typical delivery About 3 to 5 days About 10 to 17 days through a platform that handles freight
Cash on delivery Standard Possible on some platforms, riskier because of the wait
Product cost Higher, so thinner margins Lower factory prices, so wider margins
Customs None, the goods are already here Applies to imports, handled by you or the platform
Returns Shorter, simpler cycle Longer cycle, often a fixed return window
Best for Learning the order, courier and COD routine Testing higher-margin items once you know your buyers

Neither column wins on every row. Local gives you speed and fewer refused parcels. International gives you room on price. Your job is to decide which trade-off your first product can live with.

Dropshipping in Pakistan comparison of local and international models by stock, delivery, COD risk, margin, customs and returns
Local and imported dropshipping compared on six practical factors.

What Does Dropshipping in Pakistan Actually Look Like?

In the classic model, you never touch the stock. You list a product in your Shopify store, Facebook page or Instagram shop. A customer orders, and the supplier packs and ships it under your store's name. You keep the gap between your selling price and the supplier's price, minus delivery and ad costs.

Pakistan adds two twists. First, most buyers still want to pay in cash at the door. Second, much of dropshipping in Pakistan doesn't involve a foreign supplier at all. Sellers work with local platforms that hold stock here and book the courier. The platform collects the cash and pays your profit into a mobile wallet.

So when people here say "dropshipping," they usually mean one of two very different businesses. One runs on local warehouses and fast COD. The other runs on cheaper imported goods and longer waits. The skills overlap, but the risks don't.

How Local Dropshipping Works

A local order usually moves through five steps:

  1. You pick a product from a Pakistani supplier platform's catalog and copy its photos and details into your store.
  2. A customer orders, usually choosing cash on delivery.
  3. You confirm the order by call or WhatsApp, then pass it to the supplier.
  4. The supplier packs it and books a courier, often within the same day.
  5. The courier collects the cash, and the platform pays your margin once delivery is confirmed.

The platforms differ more than their ads suggest. Markaz, for example, says it lists more than 150,000 products and has no minimum order. It also says it pays profit to Easypaisa or JazzCash within 48 to 72 hours of a delivered sale, according to its own roundup of local dropshipping apps. The same roundup names Zarya, Sada, HHC Dropshipping and others, with very different levels of published detail. The company wrote it about its own market. Read those claims as the platform's stated terms, and test a few orders yourself.

The weak point of local dropshipping is margin. Products that are already in the country carry the importer's cost and profit, so you have less room to spend on ads. Many beginners fix this with bundles, such as two items for one delivery charge, rather than by cutting price.

How International Dropshipping Works

With international sourcing, the product starts in a factory abroad. You can connect a supplier app to your store and ship each order straight to the buyer. Or you can use a platform that brings goods into Pakistan and delivers them for you.

Direct shipping from abroad is the hardest route for a Pakistani beginner. You usually pay the supplier upfront by card, the buyer waits for weeks, and cash on delivery is either unavailable or very risky. So most sellers who source from China use a middle option. A platform handles freight and customs and still offers COD to the end buyer. Markaz describes this model in its comparison of local and international dropshipping, quoting roughly 10 to 17 days for China-sourced orders.

The upside is real. Factory prices leave space for a healthy margin, even after ads. The cost is time, and in a COD market, time turns into refused parcels.

Why Do Delivery Days Matter So Much With Cash on Delivery?

Payment data explains a lot about dropshipping in Pakistan. The State Bank's latest Annual Payment Systems Review found that 92% of retail payment transactions went through digital channels in FY26, as ProPakistani reported. Online shopping hasn't fully followed. A DHL guide for Pakistani sellers cites a TGM Research survey showing that nearly 70% of online shoppers still choose cash on delivery.

That matters because a COD buyer hasn't paid anything yet. If the parcel arrives two weeks later, they may have bought the same item elsewhere, changed their mind, or simply forgotten. The same DHL guide estimates that about 1 in 5 COD parcels nationally returns to the sender, a return-to-origin rate of roughly 18% to 20%. DHL doesn't name a source for that estimate, so use it as a rough benchmark, not an exact figure.

On a returned parcel, you usually still pay the delivery and return charges, and you earn nothing. Longer delivery tends to push that rate up. This is the main reason a slower, cheaper product can end up less profitable than a faster, pricier one.

You can cut refusals on either model. Confirm every order on WhatsApp before booking, give an honest delivery estimate at checkout and offer a small discount for advance payment. Our guide to reducing COD returns in Pakistan walks through a full store setup for this.

Customs and the Rs. 1,000 Courier Parcel Limit

For years, goods worth up to Rs. 5,000 that came in through courier or postal services were exempt from duties and taxes. Under the Finance Act, 2025, Section 19C was amended so the exemption now covers individual parcels worth no more than Rs. 1,000, according to PKRevenue's summary of the change. It remains subject to rules the FBR may prescribe.

For international dropshipping in Pakistan, that change has a practical effect. Most items you'd sell for a decent margin are worth more than Rs. 1,000 on paper, so you shouldn't build a business plan that assumes duty-free single parcels from abroad. Ask any import platform or cargo agent you use how duties are handled and whether that cost is already in their price. Check the FBR's current rules before you import stock in bulk, because the procedures can change after a budget.

Local dropshipping avoids this question completely. The supplier imported the goods and paid any duties before you listed them.

What You Pay Before Your First Sale

Both models share the same setup costs. The big ones are your store, your ads and your time spent confirming orders. If you build on Shopify, a May 2026 pricing breakdown by Website Builder Expert lists the Basic plan at $29 a month on annual billing or $39 billed monthly. It adds a 2% fee on payments that don't go through Shopify Payments. It also notes a three-day free trial and a $1-a-month offer for the first three months on annual plans. These are US list prices, so check what Shopify shows you in Pakistan before you budget.

You don't need a website on day one, though. Many sellers start with a Facebook page and WhatsApp, then move to a store once orders are steady. Our Shopify pre-launch checklist covers what to set up when you're ready.

Price One Product Both Ways

Before you list anything, fill in this sheet for the same product sourced locally and from abroad. Use the real quotes your supplier and courier give you.

Line Local version Imported version
Selling price to the buyer Your price Your price
Supplier or platform price Usually higher Usually lower
Delivery charge per order Courier or platform rate Includes freight share, check carefully
Duties and taxes Already paid by supplier Ask if included in the price
Ad cost per order From your test campaign From your test campaign
Expected return rate Your own figure after 30 orders Likely higher, track it separately
Profit per delivered order Price minus all costs Price minus all costs

The step most people skip is the return line. Spread the cost of refused parcels across your delivered orders. A product with a strong margin and a high return rate can earn less than one with a modest margin that buyers almost never refuse.

Which Products Suit Each Model?

Two questions sort most products. How much margin does the item leave after ads, and will a buyer happily wait two weeks for it? Put each product idea into one of four boxes.

  • High margin, buyer will wait: unusual gadgets, niche hobby tools or items nobody sells locally. This is where imported stock makes sense.
  • High margin, buyer wants it fast: seasonal or gift items. Source locally, or bring a small batch into the country before the season starts.
  • Low margin, buyer wants it fast: everyday accessories. Local only, and use bundles to lift the order value.
  • Low margin, buyer will wait: skip these. You carry the import risk without the reward.

Daraz is a separate case. It suits sellers who hold their own or sourced stock rather than pure dropshippers. If marketplace selling interests you, read our step-by-step guide on how to sell on Daraz before you mix the two.

Is International Dropshipping Worth It for a Beginner?

Usually not as a first step, at least not for dropshipping in Pakistan with COD buyers. In your first month, you're learning a lot at once: product photos, ad testing, order confirmation, courier booking and handling returns. Adding long delivery times and import questions to that list makes it hard to tell why a product failed.

It becomes worth it once you have a local product that sells steadily and you understand your own return rate. At that point, testing a few higher-margin imported items is a measured step, not a gamble. Tell buyers the delivery estimate plainly on the product page, and many of them will accept the wait.

Which Model Should You Start With?

Here's a simple rule you can follow:

  1. Start local if you plan to sell through COD, have a small budget or are still learning ads.
  2. Run at least 30 delivered orders and write down your return rate, ad cost per order and profit per order.
  3. Pick one or two products in the "high margin, buyer will wait" box and test them through an import platform.
  4. Compare the profit per delivered order, not the margin on paper, after another 30 orders.
  5. Keep whichever model earns more per order, or run both with separate tracking.

Working this way, you're making decisions from your own numbers rather than from someone's screenshot. That's what keeps a small store alive after the first month.

Mistakes That Hurt New Dropshippers

  • Skipping order confirmation. Booking a courier for an unconfirmed COD order is the fastest way to lose money on returns.
  • Hiding delivery times. Buyers who weren't told about a two-week wait are the ones who refuse the parcel.
  • Copying a supplier's photos without checking stock. Ask the platform how it updates stock levels, and remove sold-out items quickly.
  • Pricing from the supplier cost alone. Delivery, ads and returns decide your profit, so price after filling in the sheet above.
  • Scaling ads too early. Wait until a product proves itself on a small budget. Our walkthrough of click-to-WhatsApp ads shows a low-cost way to test.

A One-Evening Exercise to Pick Your Model

Choose one product you'd like to sell. Find it on one local supplier platform and one import option, then fill in both columns of the pricing sheet with real quotes. If the imported version only wins on paper and loses once you add a realistic return rate, start local. You'll have learned more from that one sheet than from a week of watching videos.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start dropshipping in Pakistan without any investment?

Some local platforms advertise zero investment and no minimum order, so you don't need to buy stock upfront. You will still spend money on ads, possibly a store subscription and the delivery charges on refused parcels. Keep a small test budget aside and treat your first 30 orders as practice rather than profit.

How long does delivery take for local and China-sourced orders?

One Pakistani supplier platform quotes about 3 to 5 days for products already stocked locally and about 10 to 17 days for China-sourced orders it imports. Treat these as typical figures, not promises. Tell buyers the expected delivery time on the product page so the wait doesn't surprise them.

Do I need a Shopify store to start dropshipping?

No. Many sellers start with a Facebook page, Instagram and WhatsApp, then move to a store once orders become steady. A store helps with tracking, ads and a professional look. If you choose Shopify, check the plan price it shows you in Pakistan before you commit, since published prices are usually US list prices.

Can I offer cash on delivery on imported products?

Some import platforms let you offer cash on delivery even on China-sourced items. The risk is higher, because buyers who wait two weeks or more are more likely to refuse the parcel. Confirm each order on WhatsApp and state the delivery time clearly, or offer a discount for paying in advance.

Will I pay customs duty on parcels from China?

Very likely, for most products. According to a summary of the Finance Act, 2025, the duty-free limit for individual courier or postal parcels was reduced to Rs. 1,000, from the earlier Rs. 5,000. Ask your import platform or cargo agent whether duties are included in the price, and check current FBR rules.

What return rate should a new dropshipper aim for?

A DHL guide for Pakistani sellers suggests keeping COD return rates below 20%, and estimates the national average at roughly 18% to 20%. Track your own rate from your first order onward. Confirming orders before dispatch and setting honest delivery times are the two habits that lower it most.

Does the PSTA e-commerce course cover dropshipping?

Yes. The 12-week beginner course includes a full dropshipping module alongside product hunting, local and global sourcing, Shopify and WooCommerce stores, Facebook and Google Ads, and payment gateways with logistics. Classes run on campus in Abbottabad or live online, and you can check the current fee and batches on the course page.
