What Is Cyber Security, and What Will This Course Teach You?

Cyber security is the practice of protecting computers, networks and data from attack, damage and unauthorized access. Ethical hacking is one part of it: testing systems the way an attacker would, but only with permission, so weaknesses can be fixed first.

This course focuses on the defender's side. You start with the core ideas, such as the CIA triad (confidentiality, integrity and availability) and risk, then move through common attacks, basic ethical hacking, network security, malware and threat detection, cyber law and digital forensics. Every topic ends with practical work, so you can explain what you did and why.

What Will You Practice in the Labs?

  1. Set up a safe, isolated practice lab for security testing.
  2. Map a test network and identify the devices and services running on it.
  3. Run vulnerability scans and write clear findings that a manager can act on.
  4. Recognize phishing, malware, DDoS, SQL injection and social engineering attacks.
  5. Configure core network defenses such as firewalls, VPNs and intrusion detection.
  6. Investigate a security incident, preserve evidence and document a timeline.
  7. Complete a final case-study project and present your security report.

Why Are Cyber Security Skills in Demand?

Employers are short of people with practical security skills, not just job titles. In ISC2's 2025 Cybersecurity Workforce Study, which surveyed more than 16,000 professionals, 59% reported critical or significant skills shortages on their teams, up from 44% the year before, as reported by Infosecurity Magazine.

In Pakistan, banks, telecom companies, software houses, hospitals and government departments all store sensitive data, and each needs people who can protect it. Skills that are useful on day one, such as reading logs, hardening a network and responding calmly to an incident, are exactly what this course practices.

Which Certifications Does This Course Prepare You For?

This is a PSTA course, not an official vendor exam course, but it covers the foundations that popular certifications test:

  • CompTIA Security+ is a common first certification for security analyst and systems administrator roles. CompTIA says Security+ V8 is expected to launch on or around November 17, 2026 (CompTIA Security+).
  • Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) is now at version 13. The knowledge exam has 125 multiple-choice questions over four hours, and EC-Council recommends at least two years of IT security experience for candidates who don't take its official training (EC-Council CEH).

For a full comparison of costs and the best order to take them, read our guide to cyber security certifications for beginners.

Is Ethical Hacking Legal in Pakistan?

Ethical hacking is legal only when you have clear permission to test a system. Accessing someone else's system or data without authorization can be an offense under Pakistan's Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, which was amended in 2025. In this course, all testing happens in lab environments built for practice, and the cyber law module explains the rules you must follow at work.

What Jobs Can You Apply for After This Course?

With a portfolio of lab reports and your final project, you can target entry-level roles such as:

  • Junior SOC (security operations center) analyst
  • IT support or system administrator with security duties
  • Network administrator in a small or mid-sized company
  • Security-aware freelancer offering website and network hardening

Most graduates will still need practice, a certification or an internship before senior roles. If you want to specialize in offensive security next, continue with our Advanced Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing Course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need programming or IT experience to join?

No. The course starts from the fundamentals, so basic computer skills are enough. Comfort with typing, files and the internet will help you move faster. If you have never worked with networks before, the first weeks cover the ideas you need before any hands-on testing begins.

Can I take this cyber security course online?

Yes. You can join online classes from any city in Pakistan, or attend on campus in Abbottabad. Both options follow the same 12-week course outline and include practical lab work.

How is this course different from the Advanced Ethical Hacking course?

This course is the beginner foundation, focused on understanding attacks and defending networks. The Advanced Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing Course is an intermediate track for students who want to specialize in offensive testing after they have the basics.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. Students who complete the course receive a PSTA certificate, which employers can check on our certificate verification page. For an internationally recognized credential, you can sit an exam such as CompTIA Security+ separately.
