Quick answer
For most beginners, the best cyber security certifications to start with are Cisco CCST Cybersecurity ($125) or the Google Cybersecurity Certificate, followed by CompTIA Security+ ($439). ISC2 CC is no longer free for new candidates and costs $199. Leave CEH for later, since it expects two years of experience or paid official training.
Key takeaways
- • Start with an entry exam such as Cisco CCST Cybersecurity ($125) or the Google certificate, not CEH.
- • ISC2 closed free CC enrollment on May 20, 2026; the exam now costs $199 plus $50 a year.
- • Security+ (SY0-701) is the widely recognized next step; its US price rose to $439 in June 2026.
- • SY0-701 retires on June 11, 2027, and Security+ V8 is expected in November 2026.
- • CEH asks for two years of experience or official training from $1,699.
- • Pair any certificate with a home lab and written investigations; employers screen for skill.

A lot of students walk into our cyber security class believing one thing: CEH is the first cyber security certification you should earn. In most cases it isn't. EC-Council's own page says candidates should have at least two years of IT security experience or take its official training, which makes CEH a poor first step for a fresh graduate in Abbottabad or Peshawar.
The better question is which cyber security certifications fit where you are today, what they cost in 2026, and in what order to take them. That is what this guide compares.
Here is what you will be able to decide after reading:
- Which five beginner-friendly certifications are worth your attention, and which one to skip for now
- What each exam costs in US dollars and how long it takes
- What changed this year, including the end of a popular free exam offer
- A sensible order to earn them over roughly a year
- What Pakistani employers actually check besides a certificate
Do You Need a Certification to Start in Cyber Security?
No certificate is legally required to work in security. Still, for a beginner with no job history, a recognized exam is one of the few ways to prove you know the basics. It gets your CV past the first filter, especially for roles at banks, telecom companies and managed security providers.
What a certificate can't do is replace hands-on skill. The 2025 ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study surveyed 16,029 security professionals. Hiring managers in that study ranked problem solving (29%), collaboration (24%) and communication (22%) ahead of most technical skills. So think of a certification as the ticket to the interview. Your labs, notes and how you explain your thinking decide the rest.
The study also found that 59% of respondents reported critical or significant skills needs in their teams, up from 44% the year before. There is room for newcomers, too: among professionals aged 21 to 29, 38% came in through alternative routes such as certifications rather than a traditional IT path.
The Five Cyber Security Certifications Beginners Ask About Most
When students ask us where to start with cyber security certifications, the same five names come up. Here is what each one is, in plain terms.
Cisco CCST Cybersecurity
The Cisco Certified Support Technician Cybersecurity exam (code 100-160) is the cheapest serious option on this list at $125. It runs 50 minutes and covers security principles, network and endpoint security, vulnerability assessment, risk management and incident handling. Cisco prepares candidates through the Junior Cybersecurity Analyst Career Path on its Networking Academy, and it treats CCST as a stepping stone toward the CyberOps Associate.
ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC)
CC is the entry-level credential from ISC2, the body behind CISSP. It requires no work experience. For years many Pakistani students took it free, but ISC2's One Million Certified in Cybersecurity program stopped taking new enrollments on May 20, 2026. New candidates now pay $199 for the exam, plus a $50 annual maintenance fee after passing. If you already received a free exam code and it hasn't expired, you can still sit the exam until December 31, 2026.
Google Cybersecurity Certificate
This is a training program with a certificate, not a single proctored exam. The Google Cybersecurity Certificate has eight courses and takes three to six months at five to 10 hours a week. It costs $49 a month in the US and Canada, and the price varies by country. Its strength is tools: you practice with Python, Linux, SQL, SIEM platforms such as Splunk and Chronicle, Suricata, tcpdump and Wireshark. Graduates also get discounted access to the CompTIA Security+ exam.
CompTIA Security+
Security+ is a vendor-neutral exam that many employers recognize, and CompTIA maps it to roles such as security analyst and systems administrator. The current version is SY0-701, with a maximum of 90 questions, a 90-minute limit and a passing score of 750 on a 100 to 900 scale. CompTIA recommends Network+ and two years in a security or systems admin role first, but that is a recommendation, not a requirement. According to a HackerDNA price check of CompTIA's US store, the exam rose from $425 to $439 on June 1, 2026. Keeping it active costs $50 a year in continuing education fees.
CEH v13 (Certified Ethical Hacker)
CEH is the name most students have already heard of. For the CEH certification, the knowledge exam has 125 multiple-choice questions over four hours, and an optional six-hour practical exam has 20 hands-on challenges. You either show two years of security experience and pay a $100 application fee, or you buy official training, which starts at $1,699 for the on-demand course. That price alone puts it out of reach as a first step for most students here.
Cyber Security Certifications Compared Side by Side
The table below puts the facts in one place. Costs are the published US-dollar prices we found while writing this guide, and they can change, so confirm on the official page before you pay.
| Certification | Exam cost | Format | Experience needed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cisco CCST Cybersecurity | $125 | 50 minutes | None | Lowest-cost first exam |
| ISC2 CC | $199 + $50 yearly | Proctored exam | None | Recognized name, low entry bar |
| Google Cybersecurity Certificate | $49 per month (US) | 8 courses, 3 to 6 months | None | Tool practice with Linux, SQL and SIEM |
| CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) | $439 | Up to 90 questions, 90 minutes | Recommended, not required | Widely recognized entry exam |
| CEH v13 | $100 application, or training from $1,699 | 125 questions, 4 hours | 2 years, or official training | Later, after real experience |
Notice the pattern. The first three ask for no experience and cost under $200 to start. Security+ is the jump in both price and difficulty. CEH sits apart because of its eligibility rule and training cost.
What Changed for Beginners in 2026?
Some older guides and videos still repeat advice that is no longer true. Four changes matter if you are planning now.
- The free ISC2 CC offer is closed. New enrollments ended on May 20, 2026. If a website still promises a free CC exam, it is out of date.
- Security+ costs more. The US price moved to $439 in June, according to HackerDNA's check of CompTIA's store.
- A new Security+ version is coming. CompTIA says V8 is expected in November 2026, and the English SY0-701 exam retires on June 11, 2027. If you start studying today, you can still finish on SY0-701 with time to spare.
- Government security hiring is visible. On September 30, 2026, ProPakistani reported that the Ministry of IT and Telecom advertised 24 posts under its Cyber Security for Digital Pakistan project, including SOC Analyst levels 1 to 3, a SIEM Engineer and an Incident Responder.
Common Myths About Cyber Security Certifications
We hear the same misunderstandings in almost every new batch. Clearing them up early saves students money and months.
Myth: CEH is the best first certificate. Fact: its eligibility rule expects two years of experience or paid official training. Start with an entry exam and come back to CEH later if your job leans toward offensive testing.
Myth: one certificate gets you hired. Fact: employers screen for proof of skill. Hiring managers in the ISC2 study put problem solving and communication near the top of their list, and those show up in interviews and in your lab write-ups, not on a PDF.
Myth: the most expensive exam is the most respected. Fact: price reflects the vendor's training model, not your job prospects. A $125 or $439 exam backed by a solid lab portfolio often impresses an interviewer more than a costly title with nothing behind it.
Myth: the ISC2 CC exam is still free. Fact: free enrollment ended on May 20, 2026. Only people who already hold an unexpired code can test free, until December 31, 2026. Everyone else pays $199.
Myth: you can pass by memorizing question dumps. Fact: dumps usually break the exam rules you agree to before testing. They also leave you unable to answer the first practical question in an interview.
Which Certification Should You Take First?
There isn't one answer for everyone, because cyber security certifications test different things at different prices. Match the first exam to your situation.
If You Are a Student on a Tight Budget
Start with Cisco CCST Cybersecurity at $125. Its study path on Cisco Networking Academy is structured, and the exam is short enough that you won't burn months on it. Then save for Security+.
If You Want the Strongest Name on Your CV
Go straight to Security+. In our classes, beginners usually need three to four months of steady study for it. In return, you get a strict, proctored, vendor-neutral exam that carries the most weight of the entry options here.
If You Learn Best by Doing
The Google certificate gives you guided practice with Linux, SQL and SIEM tools before you face a strict exam. Use its Security+ discount as your second step.
If You Already Work in IT Support or Networking
Your experience covers much of the networking content, so Security+ is a realistic first exam. After a year or two in a security-related role, CEH or a more advanced exam becomes a sensible target.
A Realistic Order to Earn Them
Here is a sequence we suggest to students who are starting from zero. The months are a guide, not a rule. People who study 10 hours a week will move faster than those fitting it around a full-time job.
- Months 1 to 3: build the base. Learn networking basics, Linux commands and how common attacks work. Take Cisco CCST Cybersecurity or work through the Google certificate.
- Months 4 to 6: earn Security+. Study the SY0-701 objectives, do practice labs and book the exam once you score well on practice tests.
- Months 7 to 9: prove the skill. Build a small home lab, write up three investigations and publish them on GitHub or a simple blog.
- Months 10 to 12: apply and specialize. Apply for SOC analyst and IT security roles, and decide whether your next step is blue team work or penetration testing.
A little Python helps at stage three because it lets you automate log searches. Our beginner Python project guide has ideas you can adapt for security scripts.
How Much Should You Budget?
Fees for cyber security certifications are paid in US dollars, so the rupee cost moves with the exchange rate. Plan in dollars and convert on the day you pay.
- Lowest path: CCST at $125, then Security+ at $439, for $564 in exam fees.
- Middle path: ISC2 CC at $199 plus its $50 yearly fee, then Security+.
- Guided path: the Google certificate at $49 a month in the US for three to six months, then a discounted Security+ attempt.
Leave room in your budget for a retake. Planning for one removes a lot of exam-day stress. Also count the yearly upkeep: $50 for Security+ continuing education and the $50 ISC2 annual maintenance fee if you hold CC.
What Do Pakistani Employers Look For Besides a Certificate?
When you read local SOC analyst ads, the same requests tend to repeat: SIEM experience, understanding of networks and firewalls, incident handling and clear reporting. The Digital Pakistan project ad reported by ProPakistani follows that pattern: its senior posts ask for experience in SOC operations, network security and IT infrastructure.
So alongside your exam, build these four things:
- A home lab. Two virtual machines and a free SIEM are enough to practice spotting failed logins and suspicious traffic.
- Written investigations. Short reports that explain what happened, how you found it and what you would fix.
- Interview English. SOC interviews are often in English. Our guide to English interview questions and answers covers the structure that works.
- Knowledge of local law. Understand the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 so you know where legal testing ends.

Frequently asked questions
Which cyber security certification is best for a complete beginner in Pakistan?
For most beginners, Cisco CCST Cybersecurity is a sensible first exam because it costs $125, takes 50 minutes and needs no experience. If you prefer guided practice with real tools, the Google Cybersecurity Certificate is a good alternative. After either one, work toward CompTIA Security+, which is the stronger name on a CV for entry-level security roles.
Is the ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) exam still free in 2026?
Not for new candidates. ISC2 stopped accepting new enrollments in its One Million Certified in Cybersecurity program on May 20, 2026. If you already received a free exam code and it has not expired, you can still sit the exam until December 31, 2026. Everyone else now pays $199, plus a $50 annual maintenance fee after passing.
Can I take the CEH exam without any work experience?
Only through official training. EC-Council expects at least two years of IT security experience, with a $100 application fee, unless you complete its official training, which starts at $1,699 for the on-demand course. For most students, it makes more sense to earn an entry certification first and attempt CEH once you have real security experience.
Should I wait for Security+ V8 or take SY0-701 now?
If you are starting now, you can prepare for SY0-701 without rushing. CompTIA expects V8 around November 2026, and the English SY0-701 exam stays available until June 11, 2027. That gives a beginner enough time to study and test on the current version. Plenty of study material already exists for SY0-701, which is another point in its favor.
How long does it take to prepare for CompTIA Security+?
In our classes, beginners with basic networking knowledge usually need three to four months of steady study. Someone already working in IT support or networking may need less. The exam has a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes and needs a score of 750 out of 900, so practice tests and hands-on labs matter as much as reading.
Do I need a computer science degree to get a cyber security job in Pakistan?
A degree helps, especially for government and bank roles, but it is not the only route. The 2025 ISC2 Workforce Study found that 38% of professionals aged 21 to 29 entered through alternative routes such as certifications. Pair a recognized exam with a home lab, written investigations and clear English, and you can compete for junior SOC roles.
Is the Google Cybersecurity Certificate enough to get a job?
On its own, it is a strong start rather than a finish line. It teaches Python, Linux, SQL, SIEM tools, Suricata and Wireshark over eight courses, which builds practical confidence. Many employers still look for a proctored exam, so use the certificate discount to take CompTIA Security+ next, and add a portfolio of lab work.
