Quick answer

Recent PPSC computer operator papers are 100 MCQs in 90 minutes, with 80% on MS Office, internet and basic IT and 20% on general ability. FPSC BS-16 papers give 80 marks to professional topics like DBMS and networks. Shortlisted candidates then sit a typing test, usually at 40 words per minute.

Key takeaways

  • • Recent PPSC computer operator papers have 100 MCQs in 90 minutes, with 80% of marks on computer topics.
  • • FPSC BS-16 papers split 20 marks for English and 80 for professional topics such as DBMS, networks and operating systems.
  • • The typing test comes after the written paper, and recent PPSC and ECP ads set 40 words per minute.
  • • Read the eligibility notice first: qualification, age relaxation, CNIC, domicile and diploma details cause many rejections.
  • • Learn Word and Excel by using them on a real PC, and use old MCQ books only after checking their figures.
  • • A four-week plan with timed mock papers and a wrong-answers notebook covers the provincial syllabus.

Good computer operator test preparation begins with one fact: recent Punjab Public Service Commission papers for this post give 80 of 100 marks to computer questions. That means MS Office, internet, email and basic IT decide most of your score, while general knowledge, English, Urdu and maths share the other 20 marks. Federal posts work differently, and the typing test comes only after you clear the written paper.

This guide is built around practice questions, because that is how the paper itself is built. Read it and you will come away with:

  • The real paper pattern for PPSC, FPSC and Election Commission posts, taken from their own documents
  • Thirty practice MCQs with answers and a one-line reason for each
  • The extra topics a BS-16 federal paper adds, with sample questions
  • What the typing test asks for and when it happens
  • A four-week study plan you can follow alongside a job or college

What Is in a Computer Operator Test in Pakistan?

There is no single national computer operator test syllabus. Each commission publishes its own for every case, so the advert you apply against is the only document that counts. Still, recent papers fall into two clear groups.

Provincial posts in BS-12 to BS-15 test office software. Federal posts in BS-16 ask for a computer science degree and test theory such as databases and networks. The table below compares five recent official documents.

Post and body Scale Paper Mark split
Junior Computer Operator, Punjab Provincial Transport Authority (PPSC) BS-12 100 MCQs, 90 minutes 80% MS Office and IT, 20% general ability
Computer Operator, Deputy Commissioner Office Hafizabad (PPSC) BS-15 100 MCQs, 90 minutes 80% computer, 20% general ability
Computer Operator, National Highways and Motorway Police (FPSC, 2024) BS-16 100-mark MCQ test 20 English, 80 professional
Computer Operator, GHQ, Ministry of Defence (FPSC, 2026) BS-16 100-mark MCQ test 20 English, 80 professional
Data Entry Operator, Election Commission of Pakistan BS-14 Test and interview for shortlisted candidates Not published in the advert

If you live in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the same logic applies to KPPSC and ETEA posts. Download the syllabus attached to that exact case and mark which group it belongs to before you buy any book.

Start Computer Operator Test Preparation With the Advert

Most failed applications go wrong before the test. People prepare for months and then get rejected for a missing certificate or an age limit they never checked. Read the eligibility page first, line by line.

The PPSC eligibility notice for the 62 Junior Computer Operator posts is a good example of what to look for. It asked for Intermediate (second division) plus a three-month MS Office diploma from a recognized institute, or ICS (second division). It also required a typing speed of 40 words per minute in English on computer. The age limit was 18 to 28, raised to 33 for men and 36 for women through relaxation, according to the official PPSC criteria.

Before you apply, check these five things against the advert you have chosen:

  1. Your qualification matches word for word, including division or grade.
  2. Your computer diploma is from a recognized institute and shows its duration.
  3. Your age on the closing date fits, after any relaxation you can claim.
  4. Your CNIC is valid on the last date of applying, and your domicile is issued by the closing date.
  5. If you already hold a government job, you have a departmental permission certificate.

The ECP advert adds a detail many people miss. Its Data Entry Operator post required a bachelor's degree with a one-year IT or computer diploma, a speed of 40 WPM, and Urdu typing on top. If an advert mentions Urdu, practice it from day one.

How Are Marks Split Between Computer and General Questions?

On each PPSC computer operator test listed above, 80% of marks come from computer topics. For the BS-12 post, PPSC named them: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, email and basic IT. The remaining 20% is general ability, which PPSC lists as general knowledge, Pakistan Studies, current affairs, geography, English, Urdu, everyday science and basic mathematics.

That split should shape your computer operator test preparation time. If you have 10 hours a week, spend about eight on computer topics and two on general ability. Many candidates do the opposite. They memorize long lists of GK because it feels like "test prep" and then lose easy marks on Excel.

A sensible rule: learn computer topics by doing them on a real PC, and learn general ability from short daily reading. Reading that Ctrl + H opens Replace is easy to forget. Using it 20 times is not.

Practice Questions: Windows and Basic IT

Practice questions are the core of computer operator test preparation, and these computer operator MCQs start with the basics. Cover the answers with a sheet of paper, answer all eight, then check. Each answer carries a short reason so you learn the idea, not only the letter.

  1. Which memory loses its data when the power goes off? (a) ROM (b) RAM (c) Hard disk (d) USB drive. Answer: (b) RAM. It is volatile, which is why unsaved work disappears in a power cut.
  2. How many bytes are in one kilobyte, in the traditional computing sense? (a) 100 (b) 1000 (c) 1024 (d) 2048. Answer: (c) 1024. Memory sizes count in powers of two, and 2 to the power 10 is 1024.
  3. Which of these is an operating system? (a) MS Word (b) Windows 11 (c) Google Chrome (d) InPage. Answer: (b) Windows 11. The other three are application programs that run on top of an operating system.

  8. Which of these is the slowest to read data from? (a) Cache (b) RAM (c) Registers (d) Hard disk. Answer: (d) Hard disk. Storage closest to the processor is the fastest and the smallest.

Practice Questions: MS Word Shortcuts and Tools

MS Office MCQs in these papers often ask for a shortcut or the name of a feature. Every shortcut below is listed on Microsoft's own Word keyboard shortcuts page, so you can trust them over a random MCQ book.

  1. Which shortcut centers a paragraph? (a) Ctrl + C (b) Ctrl + E (c) Ctrl + J (d) Ctrl + L. Answer: (b) Ctrl + E. Ctrl + C copies, and Ctrl + J justifies the text.
  2. Which shortcut opens Find and Replace on the Replace tab? (a) Ctrl + F (b) Ctrl + R (c) Ctrl + H (d) Ctrl + G. Answer: (c) Ctrl + H. Ctrl + F opens the Navigation pane for searching only.

Practice Questions: MS Excel Formulas and Limits

Excel questions mix formula logic with a few fixed numbers. The numbers below come from Microsoft's Excel specifications and limits page for current versions. Some older MCQ books still print limits from much older Excel versions, so check the year of any book you use.

  1. How many rows does a current Excel worksheet have? (a) 65,536 (b) 1,048,576 (c) 16,384 (d) 1,000,000. Answer: (b) 1,048,576. Some old books still print 65,536.
  2. How many columns does a current worksheet have? (a) 256 (b) 1,024 (c) 16,384 (d) 65,536. Answer: (c) 16,384. The last column is XFD.
  3. Every Excel formula starts with: (a) # (b) = (c) $ (d) @. Answer: (b) =.
  4. In the formula =A1*$B$1, what does the $ sign do? (a) Formats as currency (b) Keeps the reference fixed when copied (c) Hides the cell (d) Rounds the value. Answer: (b). This is an absolute reference.
  5. Which function counts only the cells that contain numbers? (a) COUNTA (b) COUNT (c) SUM (d) COUNTBLANK. Answer: (b) COUNT. COUNTA counts every non-empty cell, including text.
  6. How many characters can a single cell hold? (a) 255 (b) 1,024 (c) 8,192 (d) 32,767. Answer: (d) 32,767. The 8,192 figure is the maximum length of a formula.
  7. The intersection of a row and a column is called a: (a) Range (b) Cell (c) Sheet (d) Field. Answer: (b) Cell. A group of cells is a range.

If you want longer, job-style Excel practice after this, the Excel interview questions guide works through formulas you would use at a desk.

Practice Questions: Internet, Email and PowerPoint

  1. In an email, the BCC field means: (a) Big carbon copy (b) Blind carbon copy (c) Basic copy (d) Backup copy. Answer: (b). Other recipients can't see who was added in BCC.
  2. Which protocol shows a padlock in the browser and encrypts the page? (a) HTTP (b) FTP (c) HTTPS (d) SMTP. Answer: (c) HTTPS.
  3. Which protocol is used to send email? (a) SMTP (b) HTML (c) URL (d) DNS. Answer: (a) SMTP. HTML is a page language and DNS turns names into addresses.

  5. An attachment ending in .pdf is usually opened with: (a) A PDF reader or browser (b) Excel (c) Paint (d) Notepad. Answer: (a).

What Changes for a BS-16 Federal Computer Operator Post?

FPSC's BS-16 posts ask for a second class or grade C bachelor's degree in computer science, and the 2026 GHQ post also accepts information technology. The paper drops general knowledge. Instead, 20 marks test English grammar and sentence structure, and 80 marks test professional topics.

The FPSC computer operator syllabus lists those professional topics as operating systems, algorithm design, database management systems, hardware and software, LAN and WAN implementation and security, software development techniques, and computer networks and the internet. That is closer to a BSCS revision paper than an office skills test.

Here are three sample questions at that level:

  1. Which SQL command quickly removes all rows but keeps the table structure? (a) DROP (b) TRUNCATE (c) ALTER (d) CREATE. Answer: (b) TRUNCATE. DROP removes the table itself.
  2. Which device connects two different networks and forwards packets between them? (a) Hub (b) Switch (c) Router (d) Repeater. Answer: (c) Router.
  3. Binary search on a sorted list of n items takes about how many steps in the worst case? (a) n (b) n squared (c) log n (d) 1. Answer: (c) log n. Each step halves the list.

For federal computer operator test preparation, revise DBMS and networking first if your degree is a few years old. They carry the most questions you can't guess from everyday computer use.

When Is the Typing Test, and How Fast Must You Be?

For the BS-12 post above, PPSC stated that only shortlisted candidates who qualify the written test are called for typing. So the computer operator typing test is a second gate, not a replacement for the paper. The eligibility notice set 40 words per minute in English, and the ECP Data Entry Operator advert set the same 40 words per minute plus Urdu.

Don't leave typing until after the result, and treat it as part of your computer operator test preparation from the first week. A month is a short time to move from 25 to 40 words per minute with good accuracy. We covered how tests measure speed and how errors reduce your score in the PSTA article on what typing speed government ads expect, so here is only the short version:

  • Practice on the same kind of keyboard the test center uses, usually a full-size desktop one.
  • Type full paragraphs from a newspaper, not random word lists.
  • Aim for accuracy first. A fast paragraph full of errors scores worse than a clean, slower one.

A Four-Week Study Plan That Fits Around Work

This computer operator test preparation plan assumes about 90 minutes on weekdays and two hours on Sunday. Stretch it to six weeks if your basics are weak.

  1. Week 1, Windows and basic IT: learn hardware, memory, file types and Windows shortcuts on a real PC. Start 15 minutes of typing daily.
  2. Week 2, Word: make a letter, a CV and a two-page report, using every shortcut in this guide at least once.
  3. Week 3, Excel and PowerPoint: build a salary or expense sheet with SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT and one absolute reference, then a five-slide deck.
  4. Week 4, internet, email and general ability: send a formal email with an attachment, revise Pakistan Studies and current affairs, and sit two timed mock papers of 100 questions in 90 minutes.

In every week, keep a "wrong answers" notebook. Write the question, the right answer and why you missed it. Revise only that notebook in the last three days.

Preparing for the Test in PSTA's Office Automation Course

If you want structured computer operator test preparation with an instructor, note that the provincial paper tests almost exactly what our Certified Office Automation Course covers. Over 12 weeks, it moves through computer and Windows basics, file management and internet, English and Urdu typing with speed practice, then Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and ends with a final practical exam. You also complete a timed data entry task in Excel, which is good rehearsal for test pressure.

The current fee is Rs. 12,000, down from the regular Rs. 15,000, and you can split it into two installments. You can sit in class at the PSTA campus in Mandian, Abbottabad, across the road from FIMS College, join live online from any city, or mix the two. A fresh batch starts each month.

Some readers need more than office skills. If the advert you are targeting asks for a one-year computer diploma, look at our one-year DIT program, and read what jobs a DIT opens up before you enroll. If typing is your weak point, the 30-day English and Urdu typing course includes test simulations in both languages. The full list of programs sits on the courses page, and seats are booked through admission.

Write One Timed Mock Paper This Sunday

Pick a quiet two hours. Take the 30 questions in this guide, add 70 from your own notes or a recent book, and answer all 100 in 90 minutes without a phone. Mark it honestly. Whatever section loses you the most marks becomes next week's first topic, and that one habit will do more for your result than another stack of MCQ books.

Frequently asked questions

What is the syllabus of the PPSC computer operator test?

Recent PPSC papers for Junior Computer Operator (BS-12) and Computer Operator (BS-15) posts are one MCQ paper of 100 marks in 90 minutes. About 80% covers MS Office and IT, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, email and basic IT. The other 20% is general ability: general knowledge, Pakistan Studies, current affairs, geography, English, Urdu, everyday science and basic maths.

How is the FPSC computer operator paper different?

For BS-16 computer operator posts, FPSC asks for a bachelor's degree in computer science, or IT for the 2026 GHQ post. The MCQ test gives 20 marks to English grammar and sentence structure and 80 marks to professional topics, including operating systems, algorithm design, DBMS, hardware and software, LAN and WAN security, software development and networks.

What typing speed is needed for a computer operator job?

Recent official adverts set 40 words per minute. PPSC asked for 40 WPM in English on computer for its Junior Computer Operator posts, and the Election Commission asked for 40 WPM plus Urdu typing for a Data Entry Operator post. Always confirm the speed in the advert you are applying against, because each case can differ.

When does the typing test happen?

In the PPSC BS-12 syllabus, only shortlisted candidates who qualify the written test are called for the typing test. So you need to pass the MCQ paper first. Because the gap between the two can be short, it is wise to practice typing throughout your written test preparation rather than starting after the result.

Can I apply for a computer operator post with Intermediate?

For some provincial posts, yes. PPSC's Junior Computer Operator (BS-12) notice accepted Intermediate in second division with a three-month MS Office diploma from a recognized institute, or ICS in second division, plus 40 WPM typing. BS-16 federal posts asked for a bachelor's degree in computer science or IT, so check the scale and qualification line carefully.

Are old computer operator MCQ books still useful?

They help with question style, but check their facts. Some older books still print limits from very old Excel versions. Microsoft's specifications page lists 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns for current Excel. Use a book for practice volume, then confirm any number or shortcut against official Microsoft pages or by trying it yourself.

How long should I prepare for a computer operator test?

If you already use a computer daily, four weeks of focused study, about 90 minutes on weekdays and longer on Sundays, can cover the provincial syllabus. Beginners usually need six weeks or more, mainly for typing speed and Excel. Sit at least two timed 100-question mock papers before the real test.
