Quick answer
Google Ads certification exams are free on Skillshop. Each assessment allows 75 minutes, needs 80% to pass, and stays valid for one year. Start with Google Ads Search unless your work is store, video or app ads, study its learning path for about four weeks, and retake after one day if you fail.

A common belief in our marketing classes is that a Google Ads certification costs money, or that you must buy a course before Google lets you sit the exam. Neither is true. The Google Ads certification exams run on Skillshop, Google's own training site, with free learning paths, and each assessment gives you 75 minutes and asks for a score of 80% or more.
The harder questions are which exam to take, in what order, and what the certificate is actually worth when you apply for a job or pitch a client. That is what this roadmap covers.
Here is what you'll have by the last section:
- A clear picture of every Google Ads certification Google currently lists, and which ones count for Partner status.
- A simple way to choose your first exam based on the work you want.
- A four-week study plan that fits around classes or a day job.
- The exact steps to register, take and share the exam on Skillshop.
- An honest view of what employers and clients in Pakistan look for beyond the badge.
Is the Google Ads Certification Really Free?
Yes. The Google Ads training page on Skillshop describes its courses as free training for every kind of advertiser, and you don't pay anything to open a learning path or start an assessment. The digital badge you earn is free too. Google's Skillshop help article on digital badges calls it part of your certification benefits.
So if someone offers to sell you a "Google Ads certificate", ask what you are actually paying for. Paid training can be worth it for practice and feedback, but the certificate itself only comes from Google, and only to the person who passed the assessment.
That last point matters. Google's certification rules say you may call yourself certified only if you personally passed. A colleague's certificate or an agency's badge doesn't count, and you may use the word "certified" only while your own certification is valid.
Among free Google certification options, this is the one tied most directly to paid advertising work. What you do invest is time. Expect a few evenings per exam if you're new to ads, less if you already run campaigns.
Which Google Ads Certifications Can You Take in 2026?
Google groups its ads training into product areas. On the Skillshop Google Ads page you'll find learning paths and certifications for Search, Display, Video, Shopping ads and Measurement. Google's help pages also list a Google Ads Apps certification. Skillshop adds or renames exams from time to time, so check the catalogue on the day you start.
| Certification | What it tests | Counts for Partner badge? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Ads Search | Keywords, match types, ad copy, bidding and Search campaign setup | Yes | Almost everyone, especially service businesses |
| Google Ads Display | Audiences, placements, responsive display ads and remarketing | Yes | Brand awareness and retargeting work |
| Google Ads Video | YouTube ad formats, video campaign goals and reporting | Yes | Creators, editors and brand marketers |
| Shopping ads | Merchant Center product feeds and Shopping campaigns | Yes | Online stores and e-commerce freelancers |
| Google Ads Apps | App install and engagement campaigns | Yes | App developers and mobile marketers |
| Google Ads Measurement | Conversion tracking, attribution and reading results | Not listed | Anyone who reports results to a client or manager |
The Partner column comes from Google's Partners help page, which names Search, Display, Video, Shopping ads and Apps as the five certifications that count toward the Google Partners requirement. Google Ads Professional certifications don't count toward that badge. This only matters if you work for, or plan to start, an agency that wants Partner status. For a solo freelancer or an in-house job, the skill itself matters more.
Exam Rules You Should Know Before You Click Start
Every Google Ads certification assessment follows the same basic rules. Read them once, because the timer catches people out.
| Rule | What Google says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Time limit | 75 minutes, and the timer can't be paused | Start only when you have a quiet, unbroken hour and a quarter |
| Leaving the exam | The timer expires and you wait one day | Don't close the tab during a load-shedding warning; charge your laptop first |
| Passing score | 80% or higher | Guessing won't get you through; study the learning path |
| Failed attempt | Retake one day later | A fail costs you a day, not money |
| Validity | One year from the certification date | Plan to renew every year if you list it on a CV |
| Renewal window | Opens 30 days before expiry | Retaking earlier can get results rejected |
| Languages | 22 languages, including English (UK) and English (US) | Pick the English version you read most comfortably |
The renewal rule deserves a second look. Skillshop's badge article warns that trying to recertify before the 30-day window can lead to rejected results, denied badges or restrictions on taking Google exams. If a friend says you can boost your profile by retaking an exam early, ignore that advice.
Which Exam Should You Take First?
For most students, the answer is the Google Ads Search certification. Search campaigns are also the easiest format to explain to a small business owner: a clinic, a tuition academy or a solar installer wants to appear when someone types a need into Google. The Search exam also teaches keyword thinking that carries into Display, Shopping and SEO.
There are sensible exceptions, though. Use the decision tree below to pick your starting point, then add a second exam only after you've passed the first.
- You plan to manage ads for an online store. Start with Search, then take Shopping ads, since product feeds and Merchant Center are a separate skill.
- You edit videos or run a YouTube channel. Video can come first. It teaches you how brands buy YouTube ads, which helps when you pitch editing services.
- You already report numbers to a manager. Pair Search with Measurement, because conversion tracking is where new advertisers often get confused.
- You build apps. Apps makes sense early, but only if you have an app to promote.
Whichever you choose, take one exam at a time. Three certificates earned in one weekend look impressive on paper, but an interviewer will ask you to explain one campaign in detail, and cramming doesn't prepare you for that.
Your 4-Week Google Ads Certification Plan
This plan targets the Search exam and assumes about an hour on weekdays and two hours on one weekend day. If you have less time, stretch each week to ten days. The aim is to finish the learning path, practise inside a real interface, and walk into the assessment calm.
Week 1: Learn How Search Ads Work
Open the Search learning path on Skillshop and finish the opening modules. Focus on how the ad auction works, what Quality Score measures and how budgets differ from bids. If these terms are new, read our explainer on how auctions, budgets and match types work alongside the lessons.
Week 2: Keywords and Ad Copy
Spend this week on keyword match types, negative keywords and responsive search ads. Make it practical: choose one real local business, such as a bakery in Abbottabad, and write a list of 20 keywords and 10 negatives for it. Our guide to keyword research for beginners shows free tools for this step.
Week 3: Bidding, Measurement and Reports
Cover automated bidding strategies, conversion actions and the main columns in a campaign report. Connect what you learn to Google Analytics, because clients will ask why the numbers in two tools don't match. Our Google Analytics 4 setup guide helps here.
Week 4: Review, Then Sit the Exam
Finish any remaining modules and reread your own notes rather than random question dumps from the internet. Answer-sharing sites are often outdated, and memorising them teaches you nothing a client will pay for. Book a quiet 75-minute block on the weekend and take the assessment.
How to Register and Take the Exam on Skillshop
The process takes about ten minutes before you begin studying. Follow these steps in order.
- Go to skillshop.withgoogle.com/googleads and sign in with a personal Google account you'll keep for years. Avoid a university email that may be deleted after graduation.
- Open My Profile and check that your first and last name are spelled exactly as on your CNIC and CV. That name prints on your certificate.
- Choose the learning path for your first exam and work through its activities.
- When you're ready, start the certification assessment from the same path.
- After you pass, look for the email with your badge and certificate. Google's Skillshop certification article says you can also download certificates from the My Activities page.
- Change the badge visibility to public in your profile settings. Badges are private by default, so a recruiter can't see yours until you do this.
- Add the certification to your CV and LinkedIn with the issue month, and set a phone reminder 11 months later for renewal.
If your name is wrong after you pass, update it under My Profile, then Personal Info, and contact Skillshop Support to republish your credentials.
What Should You Do If You Fail the Exam?
Failing a Google Ads exam is common and cheap to fix. You can retake it one day later, and nothing is charged. The bigger risk is retaking it the next morning without changing how you studied.
Before your second attempt, write down the topics that confused you. Three areas usually reward a second look: bidding strategies, the difference between match types, and conversion tracking. Go back to those modules in the learning path, then explain each idea out loud in two sentences. If you can't, you aren't ready yet.
Also check your setup. A dropped Wi-Fi connection or a closed tab ends the attempt, so use a stable connection and close messaging apps before you start.
Does a Google Ads Certification Help You Get Work in Pakistan?
It helps, but not on its own. Think of it as proof that you understand the vocabulary and the rules. Employers and clients then want proof that you can apply them.
The demand side is real. DataReportal's Digital 2026 Pakistan report counted 117 million internet users in Pakistan at the end of 2025, or 45.6% of the population. The same report puts YouTube's ad reach at 54.3 million users in late 2025. Those are people local businesses can reach through Google's ad products, and every one of them is a possible customer for a local shop, school or service firm that knows how to run campaigns.
Here's what tends to separate candidates in interviews and on freelance platforms:
- A walkthrough of one campaign. Even a small practice campaign with a Rs. 500 daily budget, if you can explain the keywords, the ads and the results.
- Clear reporting. A one-page report showing clicks, cost per conversion and what you'd change next.
- Related skills. Landing page basics, Google Analytics and Meta ads. With these, you can handle a small client's whole ad setup instead of one piece of it.
- A current certificate. An expired badge suggests you stopped learning, so renew on time.
Our digital marketing portfolio roadmap shows how to turn practice work into case studies when you don't have clients yet.
Keeping Your Certification Current
Each certification lasts one year. Skillshop notifies you before it expires, and once it lapses the badge shows as expired. Renewal means passing the same product area assessment again during the window that opens 30 days before expiry.
Treat renewal as a refresher, not a chore. Google changes features, campaign types and interface labels often, and the updated learning path is the fastest way to catch up. If you hold more than one certification, stagger them so they don't all expire in the same month.
Practising Real Campaigns in PSTA's Digital Marketing Course
A certificate tells an employer you passed a test. A live campaign tells them you can do the job. If you want a structured digital marketing course in Pakistan built around live campaigns, our Advanced Digital Marketing course covers Google Ads Search, Quality Score, match types, ad copy A/B tests, Display ads and remarketing, along with SEO, Meta ads and Google Analytics. One of the course projects is a Google Search campaign with match types, two ad variations and a landing page, which is exactly the kind of work you can show after passing your exam.
The course runs for 12 weeks and you can join on our Mandian campus in Abbottabad, live online from any city, or in a mix of both. The fee is Rs. 30,000 (regular Rs. 35,000), payable in 2 installments, and a new batch starts every month. If you plan to run ads for online stores, our e-commerce course pairs well with the Shopping ads exam, and the Social Media Marketing and Meta Ads course covers the Meta side of paid ads.
Every PSTA program is listed side by side on our courses page. Once you've chosen, the admission page lists the steps, or send a short message to our team on WhatsApp at +92 314 5424399 to ask about batch timings.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Google Ads certification free in Pakistan?
Yes. Skillshop, Google's training site, offers the Google Ads learning paths and certification assessments without a fee, and the digital badge is free as well. You only need a Google account and a Skillshop profile. Be careful with anyone selling a "Google Ads certificate", because only Google issues it, and only to the person who passed the exam.
How long is the Google Ads certification valid?
Each Google Ads certification is valid for one year from the date you pass. Skillshop notifies you before it expires, and the badge shows as expired afterwards. You can renew by passing the same assessment again, but only during the recertification window that opens 30 days before the expiry date.
What is the passing score for Google Ads exams?
You need 80% or higher to pass a Google Ads certification assessment. Each attempt has a 75-minute timer that you cannot pause, and leaving the exam ends the attempt. Studying the full learning path on Skillshop is the most reliable way to reach that score instead of relying on memorised answers.
What happens if I fail the Google Ads Search exam?
You can retake it one day later, and there is no charge for another attempt. Use that day to note the topics that confused you, such as bidding strategies, match types or conversion tracking, and revisit those modules. Retaking straight away without changing how you study usually leads to the same result.
Which Google Ads certification should a beginner take first?
Most beginners should start with Google Ads Search, because it teaches keywords, match types, ad copy and bidding that carry into other campaign types. Choose Shopping ads next if you work with online stores, Video if you work on YouTube content, or Measurement if you report results to a manager or client.
Can I get a job with only a Google Ads certification?
A certification alone is rarely enough. It shows you know Google's terms and rules, but employers and clients also want to see a campaign you built and a report you wrote. A small practice campaign, a one-page results summary and basic Google Analytics skills make your certificate far more convincing.
How do I share my Google Ads certificate on LinkedIn?
After you pass, Skillshop emails your badge and certificate, and you can also download the certificate from the My Activities page. Badges are private by default, so change the visibility to public in your profile first. Then add the certification to LinkedIn and your CV with the month you earned it.
