IELTS vs PTE in Pakistan comparison poster for 2026

Quick answer

Neither test is easier for everyone. PTE Academic takes about two hours, is AI-scored and usually reports within 48 hours, which suits fast typists who speak smoothly into a microphone. IELTS takes about 2 hours 45 minutes with a live speaking examiner and costs Rs. 75,600 to 76,240 in Pakistan. Always book the exact version your university or visa names.

Key takeaways

  • • IELTS on computer takes about 2 hours 45 minutes; PTE Academic takes about 2 hours.
  • • IELTS Speaking is a live interview, while PTE is AI-scored with human checks on 7 task types.

Which is easier, IELTS or PTE? Students planning to study or work abroad ask us this all the time, and the honest answer is that neither test is easier for everyone. In the IELTS vs PTE decision, PTE usually suits people who type well and stay calm speaking to a microphone, while IELTS suits people who do better in a real conversation with an examiner.

The rest depends on money, timing and the exact rule your university or visa office follows. This guide puts the official facts side by side so you can choose with numbers in front of you.

By the end of this guide, you will know:

  • How long each test takes and how the sections are built
  • What each test costs in Pakistan right now, and where you can sit it
  • How a PTE score converts to an IELTS band, using Pearson's 2025 study
  • Which UK, Australian and Canadian routes accept which test
  • The mistakes that make students pay for the same test twice

IELTS vs PTE: The Short Version

Both tests measure the same four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Both are taken on a computer at a test centre in Pakistan, and both report results within a few days. The real differences are in who scores your speaking, how long you sit in the chair, and what each organisation charges.

Point IELTS (British Council, on computer) PTE Academic (Pearson)
Total time About 2 hours 45 minutes About 2 hours
Speaking Live conversation with an examiner, 11 to 14 minutes Recorded into a microphone at the computer
Scoring Human examiners AI scoring, with human double-marking on 7 task types
Score scale Bands 1 to 9 10 to 90
Typical results 1 to 5 days, usually about 2 Usually within 48 hours
Fee in Pakistan Rs. 75,600 or Rs. 76,240 (Academic/GT) Reported at $240
Centres in Pakistan Many cities, including Abbottabad 12 centres in 8 cities

The IELTS timings come from the British Council's IELTS FAQ. The PTE timings come from Pearson's own pages, linked in the sections below.

The five practical differences between IELTS and PTE Academic.

How Are the Two Tests Built?

IELTS on Computer

IELTS has four separate papers. Listening takes 30 minutes, Reading 60 minutes and Writing 60 minutes, all on screen. Speaking is a live conversation with a certified examiner that lasts 11 to 14 minutes. Depending on the centre, it can fall on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other three papers.

One detail matters for anyone who has seen older advice: the British Council says it no longer offers IELTS as a fully paper-based test. In Pakistan, you are now booking the computer version.

PTE Academic

PTE runs as one continuous sitting of roughly two hours, with short tasks that follow each other quickly. Many of them combine skills. In Retell Lecture, for instance, you hear a short talk and then explain it aloud, so careful listening and clear speaking both count.

Pearson changed the test on 7 August 2025. According to its article on the 2025 changes, two speaking tasks were added, Respond to a Situation and Summarize Group Discussion, bringing the total to 22 task types. Pearson says the average test length stayed around two hours.

If you practise from an old PTE book or a free app, check that it includes these two tasks. A course built before August 2025 will leave gaps.

Who Scores You: An Examiner or an Algorithm?

Of all the IELTS vs PTE differences, this is the one students feel most on test day.

In IELTS, a trained examiner sits across from you and asks questions. If you lose your words, you can rephrase and carry on, much like a normal conversation. Some students find this reassuring. Others freeze when a stranger is watching them.

In PTE, every response gets an AI score first. For seven task types, including Write Essay, Describe Image and the two new speaking tasks, human markers also check the content, and a second human steps in when the AI and the first human disagree. Pearson is clear on one point: a human never marks your pronunciation or fluency. Those come from the machine alone.

What this means in practice:

  • In PTE, long pauses and restarts hurt you, because the system listens for smooth, continuous speech.
  • PTE test rooms are shared, so practise speaking with some background noise around you.
  • In IELTS, you can show range through follow-up answers, and the examiner can see your effort to recover from a mistake.
  • In both, content still matters. A fluent answer that ignores the question scores poorly.

What Do IELTS and PTE Cost in Pakistan?

The British Council's IELTS booking page for Pakistan lists fees effective from 9 June 2026. They are in rupees, which makes the IELTS fee for 2026 easy to budget for.

Test Where Fee
IELTS Academic or General Training (computer) Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Abbottabad, Quetta and others Rs. 75,600
IELTS Academic or General Training (computer) Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot and others Rs. 76,240
IELTS for UKVI (computer) Nine cities, including Abbottabad Rs. 72,000
IELTS Life Skills A1 or B1 Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Mirpur Rs. 50,000
PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI or PTE Core 12 centres in 8 cities Reported at $240

The British Council fee also includes five extra Test Report Forms and access to its IELTS Ready Premium practice material.

Pearson does not print a Pakistan price on an open page; it shows the price when you pick a centre while booking. A Pakera report that checked Pearson's price data in September 2026 put all three PTE versions at $240, with 12 centres across Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat and Quetta. Because PTE is charged in dollars, the rupee amount on your card statement depends on the exchange rate and your bank's foreign transaction charge. So treat the PTE fee in Pakistan as a dollar price and confirm the final figure on the Pearson booking screen before paying.

For students in Hazara, location is a practical factor. The British Council lists Abbottabad as an IELTS city, while the nearest PTE centres are in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Add travel and, for an early slot, possibly a night's stay to your budget. We break down remark and retake charges in our IELTS fee guide for Pakistan.

How Does a PTE Score Convert to an IELTS Band?

The IELTS vs PTE score question comes up constantly because most offer letters state an IELTS band, then list a "PTE equivalent". Pearson published a new concordance study in July 2025, based on 1,522 people who took both the enhanced PTE Academic and IELTS Academic within 90 days of each other.

IELTS Academic band PTE Academic overall
5.5 39 to 46
6.0 47 to 54
6.5 55 to 62
7.0 63 to 70
7.5 71 to 78
8.0 79 to 85

Two cautions before you use this table. First, it is Pearson's own study, and each university or visa office sets its own equivalent. Some still use older, stricter numbers. Second, the table covers overall scores. Many offers also set a minimum for each skill, and a weak writing score can block you even when the overall score looks fine.

No PTE to IELTS score conversion replaces the institution's own rule. The safe habit is simple: find the PTE number printed by the institution itself and aim for that, not for a figure from a conversion chart online.

Which Countries and Visas Accept Each Test?

United Kingdom

If you are weighing PTE for a UK visa or a UK degree, start here. Pearson's UK page says PTE is accepted by 99% of UK universities and by the Home Office for visa categories that need proof of English. The version matters, though. Standard PTE Academic is meant for degree-level study at a UK university. PTE Academic UKVI is a Secure English Language Test for routes such as the Skilled Worker visa and study below degree level, like foundation and pathway courses. IELTS has a separate UKVI version too, so check which name your route asks for.

Australia

Australia's Department of Home Affairs accepts both IELTS and PTE Academic. Its Competent English page sets these minimums in each component for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025:

Test Listening Reading Writing Speaking
IELTS (Academic or General Training) 6 6 6 6
PTE Academic 47 48 51 54

If you are considering PTE for Australia, notice that the PTE speaking minimum is higher than the listening minimum. A student who reads and listens well but speaks hesitantly may find IELTS's flat 6 easier to reach. The same page notes that tests delivered completely online, such as IELTS Online, are not accepted.

Canada

Canada is where students make the costliest mistake. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada began accepting PTE Core on 30 January 2024, as CIC News reported. PTE Core is a different test from PTE Academic. If you need a score for Express Entry or a provincial nominee programme, booking PTE Academic by mistake means paying again. For a Canadian university admission, check the university's own list.

Is PTE Easier Than IELTS for Pakistani Students?

"IELTS or PTE, which is easier?" In the IELTS vs PTE debate, easier is the wrong word. Each test rewards a different set of habits, and you can be honest with yourself about which ones you already have.

PTE Tends to Suit You If

  • You type at a steady speed without looking at the keyboard, because essays and summaries are typed against the clock.
  • You can keep talking in full sentences without long pauses, even when you are not sure of every word.
  • You want results fast, for example when a university deadline is close.
  • You live near Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi, where most PTE centres are.

IELTS Tends to Suit You If

  • You speak more naturally in a real conversation than into a microphone.
  • Your accent is clear to people but you worry about how software will read it.
  • You need a centre close to home in a smaller city such as Abbottabad.
  • Your target institution lists IELTS clearly and is vague about PTE.

Typing is often the hidden factor. Students who type with two fingers lose minutes on PTE writing tasks that they could have used to check grammar. If that is you, a few weeks of touch-typing practice, like the drills in our English and Urdu typing course, can be worth more than another mock test.

A Simple Way to Decide Between IELTS and PTE

Work through these steps in order to settle IELTS vs PTE for your own case. Most students have their answer by step three.

  1. Read the requirement first. Open the offer letter, the university's English language page or the official visa page. Write down which tests it accepts and the exact score for each skill.
  2. Check the version. Academic, General Training, UKVI or Core: the name on your booking must match the requirement word for word.
  3. If only one test is listed, take that one. There is nothing to compare.
  4. If both are listed, take one free practice test of each. Both organisations offer sample material. Note which format left you less tired and more accurate.
  5. Compare the real cost. Add the fee, travel to the centre and the likelihood of a retake based on your practice scores.
  6. Book with enough time for one more attempt. If your deadline is close, the faster results and nearby dates may decide it for you.
Decision tree for choosing IELTS or PTE based on requirements and strengths
Three questions that settle the choice for most students.

Mistakes That Waste a Test Fee

  • Booking the wrong version. PTE Academic instead of PTE Core for Canadian immigration, or standard IELTS when your UK visa route needs IELTS for UKVI.
  • Trusting a conversion chart over the institution. If the university says PTE 58, then 58 is your target, whatever a chart says.
  • Ignoring skill minimums. An overall 65 does not help when the offer asks for 60 in every skill and your writing is 52.
  • Practising with outdated PTE material. Anything that skips the two speaking tasks added in August 2025 is incomplete.
  • Booking before your base is ready. If you still translate sentences from Urdu in your head, test strategy alone won't close the gap. Our guide to common English mistakes Pakistanis make is a useful self-check.
  • Forgetting the dollar charge. A PTE booking on a card can cost more than the headline price after exchange and bank charges.

Building Your English Base at PSTA

PSTA does not run a dedicated IELTS or PTE test-prep class, and we would rather say that plainly. What our English Spoken and Grammar course does is build the foundation both tests depend on: sentence structure, tenses, pronunciation, listening and repeating drills, group discussions and email writing.

The course runs for 12 weeks across 12 modules and is designed for beginners. The current fee is Rs. 12,000. You can join at our campus on Old College Road, Mandian, Abbottabad, opposite FIMS College, or attend live online from anywhere in Pakistan.

Taking it before test-specific practice means the mock tests that follow measure your strategy rather than basic grammar. If you want a home routine alongside it, try our 30-day plan to improve English speaking. You can see every programme on the courses page, start an application on the admission page, or send your target band and test date to PSTA on WhatsApp (+92 314 5424399) and ask whether the course fits your timeline.

Before You Pay for Either Test

Take ten minutes today to find the official English requirement for the one university or visa you want most. Copy the accepted test names and the minimum score for each skill into your phone. That single note settles most IELTS vs PTE questions and protects you from booking the wrong exam.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE accepted for a UK student visa?

Yes, with the right version. Pearson says standard PTE Academic is for degree-level study at a UK university, while PTE Academic UKVI is the Secure English Language Test for routes such as foundation or pathway courses and the Skilled Worker visa. Check your university's CAS or offer letter, then book the version it names.

Which is cheaper in Pakistan, IELTS or PTE?

The British Council lists IELTS Academic and General Training on computer at Rs. 75,600 or Rs. 76,240 depending on the city, from 9 June 2026. PTE is priced in dollars and was reported at $240 in September 2026. The PTE rupee cost depends on the exchange rate and your card charges on the day you pay.

What PTE score equals IELTS 6.5?

Pearson's July 2025 concordance study matches IELTS Academic 6.5 to a PTE Academic overall score of 55 to 62. Treat this as a guide only. Your university or visa office may use its own, sometimes higher, figure, and many also set a minimum score for each skill, not just the overall.

Can I use PTE Academic for Canada PR?

No. Canada's immigration department began accepting PTE Core on 30 January 2024 for Express Entry and most other immigration routes. PTE Core is a separate test from PTE Academic, so booking PTE Academic for permanent residence means paying for a second test. Canadian universities set their own admission rules.

Is there a PTE test centre in Abbottabad?

According to a September 2026 check of Pearson's centre data, Pakistan's 12 PTE centres are in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat and Quetta. Students in Abbottabad will need to travel, with Islamabad and Rawalpindi the closest options. The British Council does list Abbottabad as an IELTS test city.

How quickly do IELTS and PTE results arrive?

The British Council says IELTS on computer results are typically ready within 1 to 5 days, usually about 2. Pearson says PTE results typically arrive within 48 hours, though some take up to five business days if a score needs extra review. Plan your booking so you have time for a retake before your deadline.

Does a human mark PTE speaking?

Partly. Every PTE response is scored by AI first. Human markers double-check the content of seven task types, including the two speaking tasks added in August 2025. Pearson states that pronunciation and oral fluency are never marked by a human, so smooth, steady speech matters a lot in PTE.

Does Australia accept IELTS Online?

No. Australia's Department of Home Affairs says it does not accept English tests delivered completely online for visa purposes. For a visa, sit IELTS or PTE Academic at a test centre. For Competent English, Home Affairs asks for at least 6 in each IELTS component, or PTE scores of 47 to 54 by skill.
