Quick answer
Most social media interview questions test six skills: planning, content, paid ads, tracking, community handling and reporting. Prepare one real example for each, know current Meta Ads basics such as the learning phase and default attribution, and practice explaining results in three numbers: spend, results and cost per result.
Key takeaways
- • Tie every answer to a business goal and a metric, not likes.
- • Know the Meta campaign structure, the learning phase and Custom vs Lookalike audiences.
- • Meta's default website attribution is 7-day click, 1-day engage-through and 1-day view-through.
- • Click-to-WhatsApp ads suit Pakistani sellers who close orders in chat.
- • Bring evidence: a page, a small campaign or a one-page report.

Most social media interview questions in Pakistan fall into four buckets: content strategy, Meta Ads, tracking and local customer behavior. Pakistan had 79.9 million social media user identities in October 2025, a figure published in DataReportal's Pakistan report for 2026. Employers want people who can turn that attention into orders. Strong answers name a goal, a metric and a test you would run.
This guide gives you 16 questions with model answers you can adapt. Inside you will find:
- What each group of questions is checking, so you can predict follow-ups
- Model answers for content, paid ads, tracking and reporting questions
- Pakistan-specific scenarios, such as WhatsApp leads and cash-on-delivery stores
- A table that separates weak answers from strong ones

What Do Social Media Interview Questions Actually Test?
A hiring manager at a clothing brand in Lahore or a digital agency in Islamabad is rarely testing your memory. They want to know whether you can run a page without supervision and explain your choices in numbers.
That pattern holds across most social media marketing jobs in Pakistan, from a two-person startup to a large agency. The titles differ, but the core social media interview questions repeat.
Most interviews for a social media executive or manager role probe six skills:
- Planning: Can you link posts to a business goal?
- Content: Can you brief a designer and write a hook?
- Paid ads: Do you understand Ads Manager beyond the Boost button?
- Tracking: Can you prove which ad produced a sale?
- Community: How do you handle complaints in public?
- Reporting: Can you explain results to an owner who has no time?
If you prepare one solid example for each skill, you can answer almost any variation of the questions below.
Where Pakistani Audiences Are: Numbers Worth Knowing
Interviewers often ask which platform a brand should focus on. Quoting real reach figures shows that you base decisions on data. DataReportal's late-2025 advertising reach estimates for Pakistan are:
| Platform | Ad reach in Pakistan (late 2025) | Share of population |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok (adults 18+) | 79.9 million | 54.6% of adults |
| YouTube | 54.3 million | 21.2% |
| 52.9 million | 20.6% | |
| 22.4 million | 8.7% |
Two cautions make your answer sound more experienced. First, these are ad reach estimates, not active users. Second, DataReportal notes that user identities may not represent unique people. If you mention both caveats, the interviewer knows you read the source rather than a headline.
Content and Strategy Questions
1. "How would you plan the first month for our page?"
Start with a short audit. Look at the last 30 posts, find the three that brought the most messages or sales, and note what they share. Then propose a calendar built around those formats. A sample answer: "I would spend the first week studying your top posts and your competitors in the Meta Ad Library. In weeks two to four, I would publish three Reels and two product posts each week, then compare saves, shares and message clicks."
2. "Which metric matters most?"
Avoid naming likes. Say it depends on the goal, then give examples. For a store that sells through WhatsApp, it is conversations started and orders confirmed. For a training institute, it is qualified leads. For brand awareness, it is reach within the right city and age group.
3. "How does the Instagram algorithm decide what to show?"
Keep this answer grounded. Instagram head Adam Mosseri has said the app uses several ranking systems, and that Feed and Reels each judge content differently. In a December 2025 report on his explanation, early signals such as watch time, saves and shares were highlighted. So you would plan Reels that hold attention in the first seconds and give people a reason to save or send them.
4. "Show us a post you would change."
Interviewers love this one because it tests judgment. Pick one of their real posts before the interview. Explain what you would change, why, and how you would measure the result. Keep the tone respectful. You are offering an improvement, not criticizing their team.
Meta Ads Interview Questions for Paid Roles
If the job title mentions ads or performance, expect at least half the interview to sit here. Recruiters often call these Facebook ads interview questions, even though the same Ads Manager runs Instagram campaigns too. Many candidates in Pakistan have only boosted posts, so clear answers on Ads Manager set you apart. Our comparison of boosting and Ads Manager covers the basics if you need a refresher.
5. "Explain the structure of a Meta campaign."
Three levels. The campaign holds the objective. The ad set holds the audience, placements, schedule and often the budget. The ad holds the creative, copy and link. Add one practical point: you keep a test clean by changing one level at a time.
6. "What is the learning phase, and how do you handle it?"
After launch or a big edit, Meta's delivery system explores who responds. Meta's documentation still describes exiting this phase after about 50 optimization events in seven days, as Jon Loomer has tracked. Your answer: avoid frequent edits, don't split a small budget across many ad sets, and pick an event the account can realistically reach 50 times a week.
7. "Our ads get clicks but no sales. What would you check?"
Work from the ad to the checkout:
- Does the ad promise match the landing page or chat reply?
- Does the page load quickly on a mid-range phone and mobile data?
- Are price, delivery charge and return terms visible?
- Is the Pixel firing on the purchase or lead step?
- How fast does someone reply to WhatsApp messages?
Ending with response speed is smart. Many Pakistani sellers lose orders in the chat, not in the ad.
8. "How would you spend a small monthly budget?"
Show restraint. Run one campaign with one or two ad sets, test two or three creatives, and let it run for several days before judging. Retarget people who engaged with your page or messaged you. Report cost per result, not cost per click.
9. "What's the difference between a Custom Audience and a Lookalike?"
A Custom Audience is built from people who already know you, such as website visitors, video viewers or a customer list. A Lookalike asks Meta to find new people who resemble a source audience. Mention that a Lookalike is only as good as its source, so a list of buyers beats a list of page likers.

Tracking and Reporting Questions
10. "Pixel or Conversions API?"
Both, if the website allows it. The Pixel records actions in the browser. The Conversions API sends events from the server, which helps when browsers block tracking. When both send the same event, it must be deduplicated so one sale is not counted twice.
11. "What attribution setting does Meta use by default?"
This question separates current candidates from those using old notes. According to Jon Loomer's 2026 attribution guide, the default for website conversion campaigns is 7-day click-through, 1-day engage-through and 1-day view-through. Since March 2026, click-through counts only conversions after a link click. Engage-through replaced the older engage-view setting. You can add that you would compare results with your own order records, because view-through can make results look better than they are.
12. "How do you report results to a busy owner?"
Lead with three numbers: money spent, results achieved and cost per result. Then give one lesson and one next step. Keep the full data in an appendix. An owner in Abbottabad running a bakery does not need a 20-slide deck. They need to know whether to spend more next month.
Pakistan Scenario Questions You Should Expect
13. "Most of our sales happen on WhatsApp. How would you use ads?"
Suggest click-to-WhatsApp ads, which open a chat instead of a website. Then add a cost detail most candidates miss. Under WhatsApp Business Platform pricing, when someone messages you from one of these ads on a phone and you reply within 24 hours, a 72-hour free entry point window opens. During it, all messages, including templates, are free. This applies to businesses on the WhatsApp Business Platform.
14. "How would you reduce fake or cancelled COD orders?"
Social media managers in e-commerce often get this one. Mention order confirmation by message or call, clear delivery charges in the ad, and real product videos so customers know what arrives. You can also point to our post on building a marketing portfolio if you want practice projects of this kind.
15. "An angry customer posts a complaint under our ad. What do you do?"
Reply publicly within business hours, calmly, with a short apology and a way to continue privately. Never delete a fair complaint. Hide only abuse, spam or personal data. Then report the issue to the team that can fix it, and follow up publicly once it is solved.
Practical Tasks and Trial Assignments
Many agencies now add a short test. Common tasks include writing three ad captions, drafting a one-week calendar, or reviewing a live campaign screenshot.
16. "Why should we hire you over someone with more years?"
Expect this near the end of a social media manager interview. Point to evidence. Show a page you grew, a campaign you ran with a small budget, or a report you prepared. If you have no client work yet, run a small campaign for a family business or your own page. Present the results honestly, including what did not work.
Certificates help a little. The Meta Digital Marketing Associate exam had a $99 voucher price on the public US listing in a September 2026 cost review, and the price can differ by country. Most employers in Pakistan still care more about results you can show.
Weak vs Strong Answers at a Glance
Use this table to review your own answers. Each row shows a common theme from social media interview questions and the gap between a vague reply and a convincing one.
| Question theme | Weak answer | Strong answer |
|---|---|---|
| Best metric | "Likes and followers" | Names a metric tied to the goal, such as orders or leads |
| Learning phase | "Wait a few days" | Explains about 50 events in 7 days and avoids frequent edits |
| Attribution | "Facebook tells us sales" | Knows the default windows and checks against real orders |
| Small budget | "Boost every post" | One campaign, few ad sets, two or three creatives |
| WhatsApp sales | "Add the number to posts" | Click-to-WhatsApp ads plus fast replies |
| Complaints | "Delete the comment" | Public reply, private follow-up, team escalation |
How Should You Prepare in the Week Before?
A focused week beats a month of reading random lists. Treat the plan below as practice for both the questions and the trial task:
- Day 1: Study the company's pages and its ads in the Meta Ad Library.
- Day 2: Pick one post you would improve and write down why.
- Day 3: Rehearse answers 5 to 11 out loud, with numbers.
- Day 4: Prepare a one-page sample report from your own page or campaign.
- Day 5: Practice the trial tasks: three captions and a weekly plan.
- Day 6: Run a mock interview in English with a friend. Our guide to English interview answers helps with phrasing.
- Day 7: Rest, then reread your notes for 20 minutes.
Building Interview-Ready Skills in PSTA's SMM Course
Many questions above come straight from tasks covered in PSTA's SMM and Meta Ads course. It is a 12-week, beginner-level program. At the time of writing, the course page shows a fee of Rs. 24,000 (the earlier listed price was Rs. 30,000).
The modules include competitor research with the Meta Ad Library and TikTok Creative Center, Pixel and Conversions API setup, Custom and Lookalike audiences, WhatsApp Business API, GA4 tracking with UTM parameters, and reports in Looker Studio and Power BI. Your final project is a live campaign that you plan, run and report on yourself. That project becomes evidence you can open on your phone during an interview.
You can join in Abbottabad, attend live online from anywhere in Pakistan, or mix the two. New batches start each month. If you would rather study a broader marketing program, look at the Advanced Digital Marketing course. Compare options on the courses page, or start your admission form when you are ready. For questions about batch timing, message the admissions team on WhatsApp at +92 314 5424399, or visit the campus on Old College Road in Mandian, opposite FIMS College.
Before Your Interview: Pull Three Numbers From a Real Page
Choose one page you manage, even a small one. Write down its reach, its best post and one result from the last 30 days. Practice explaining those three numbers in under a minute. That short answer will help you with more social media interview questions than any memorized script.
Frequently asked questions
How long should my answers be in a social media interview?
Aim for 45 to 90 seconds per answer. Open with a direct reply, add one example from a page or campaign you handled, and finish with the result in numbers. If the interviewer wants more detail, they will ask. Long answers without numbers usually sound less confident than short ones that end with a clear figure.
Do I need a Meta certification to get a social media job in Pakistan?
No. A certificate can help you get noticed, but most hiring managers decide based on work you can show. A page you grew, a small campaign you ran and a clear one-page report usually carry more weight. If you take an exam later, check the current voucher price for Pakistan before you book.
What should I bring to a social media marketing interview?
Bring a phone or laptop with two or three work samples ready to open offline. Good choices are a content calendar, screenshots of a campaign with spend and results visible, and a short report. Also note one post from the company's own page that you would improve, because many interviewers ask for exactly that.
How do I answer if I have only boosted posts and never used Ads Manager?
Be honest and show that you are closing the gap. Explain what you learned from boosting, then describe how you would rebuild the same goal in Ads Manager with the right objective, audience and placements. Better still, run a small test in Ads Manager before the interview so you can speak from practice.
Will the interview be in English or Urdu?
Many companies in Pakistan mix both. Agencies with foreign clients often run the full interview in English, while local brands may switch to Urdu for comfort. Prepare your key answers in English, especially numbers and ad terms, and practice saying them aloud so you sound calm whichever language the panel uses.
What is a typical trial task for a social media executive role?
Common tasks include writing three ad captions for a product, drafting a one-week posting plan, or reviewing a screenshot of a live campaign and suggesting changes. You may get one to three days. Keep the work neat, explain your reasoning in a few bullet points, and submit on time rather than adding extra pages.
How can a fresh graduate show social media experience?
Create your own proof. Manage a page for a family shop, a university society or a local tutor for a month. Track reach, messages and any orders, then write a short summary of what worked and what did not. This gives you real numbers to discuss, which matters more than a long list of tools.
